Meet Wendy
Wendy Sacks is running for Eagle County Commissioner to bring practical experience, thoughtful stewardship, and common sense leadership to the decisions that shape our community.
My name is Wendy Sacks, and I would like to be your next Eagle County Commissioner. I was born and raised in Akron, Ohio. It’s a great place to be from. I had a large extended family there. It seemed I couldn’t go anywhere without running into a relative. There’s something very comforting about that familiarity. I feel the same way about Eagle County. Having lived here for 44 years, there’s something special about my sense of belonging and our community. After attending college at the University of Arizona, I decided it was a great time to improve my skiing. Hence my move to the valley. I had an illustrious waitressing and bartending career from 1982-1990 at a variety of places. Denali’s (in the Crest Lodge, now the Evergreen), The Lodge at Vail, Red Lion, Potato Patch and Whiskey Creek Stockman’s Club all hold a special place in my heart. After blowing out my knee for the first time in 1990, it was time to hang up my apron. I got my real estate license and founded a company called Alpine Resort Real Estate. Although I still retain an active license, I realized that wasn’t a great fit for me. Then, opportunity came knocking. Some acquaintances approached me with an offer to invest in a local development project. In 1992, I brought Eby Creek Mesa out of receivership. It had 3 houses and a building moratorium. The original developers were just a decade ahead of their time. It was a great project and learning experience. I had finally found my calling…almost. I first landed in East Vail in 1982. Then it was on to Eagle-Vail from 1987-1993. I built my first home in Lake Creek in 1993 under the tutelage of a friend who was a general contractor. It was then that I realized I loved the construction process. I acquired a few lots in Eby Creek and began my career as a developer/general contractor. The three key ingredients to being a successful contractor are organization, communication and common sense. That pretty much describes me to a tee. I went on to build throughout the valley. A duplex in Eagle-Vail, 3 homes in Cordillera, 3 homes in Eby Creek Mesa, 3 homes in old town Eagle, and my current residence outside of Eagle. I bought the Brush Creek building in downtown Eagle in 1995. It had a lot of charm but was ultimately a tired, old building. In 2008, I had it deconstructed and repurposed the studs to provide a wind break for my hay barn. I built the current building to try to retain the look of the old West with the parapet roof. I’ve spent a bit of time with the local orthopedic surgeons in the valley. It was a busy period in my life from 2020-2023. A second ACL, a torn rotator cuff and a knee replacement took up a lot of my time. We are very fortunate to have access to world-class health care providers. I was also very happy with the care I received at Vail Health I am happy to say that all my surgeries were a success. Then came 2025. During my routine mammogram, they found a lump. It freaks you out when they first tell you. I was extremely fortunate. It was caught early, was small and not aggressive. The Shaw Cancer Center is an amazing facility. I received the best comprehensive care. Not just physically, but emotionally as well. I urge all of you to make sure to get your prescribed mammograms. I am grateful to my parents who raised me to embrace a philanthropic and civic duty. Although they are no longer alive, I think they would be proud of me. My contributions to the community have been varied and extremely rewarding. I was a big sister in the local Buddy program. I ran the local Ducks Unlimited banquets for 9 years raising awareness and money for wetland reclamation. I was a CASA - Court Appointed Special Advocate. This program pairs lay people to advocate for abused or neglected kids currently involved in a Health and Human Services Case within the court system. Heartbreaking at times, but all the cases with which I was involved had a happy ending. I served on the Eagle County Fair and Rodeo Board. During that time, I was instrumental in raising considerable funds to support our local 4H clubs. I joined the Eagle County Conservation District Board of Supervisors in 2012 and continue to serve to this day. Their mission to thoughtfully maintain and preserve our natural resources continues to resonate with me. I have lived in this valley longer than I haven’t. I can’t imagine living anywhere else. I know growth and development are inevitable and I’m okay with that. But we seem to be on the wrong path. It feels like we’re losing our sense of identity and community that makes the valley such a special place. I think we need to bring thoughtful development to address the needs of the community. I believe I am the best person to steer us in the right direction.
